How to Generate Passive Income & Avoid Mistakes

Are you looking to understand how to generate passive income and scale your business? These days “Passive Income” seems to be the pot of gold at the end of the Yogirepreneur rainbow!

Passive income is a popular concept that has become a buzzword in the online business  world. It may be something you’ve thought about and working towards. Like many, you may be looking to understand how to make money online. And it’s no surprise, as making money whilst you sleep or on the beach sounds very appealing!

Often the things you hear or read, imply passive income gives you total freedom once it is set up. Allowing you to remain hands off whilst the money rolls in. Without you needing to do anymore work.

But that isn’t the case. Setting up profitable passive income streams takes dedication and continued hard work to manage. This is important for you to understand so that you avoid making passive income mistakes that could cost you more time and money in the long run.

Generating passive income isn’t as simple or straightforward as some coaches online portray. Figuring out how to generate a steady flow of cash requires a fair amount of work, dedication, time and investment.

Passive income can be a path to building a highly profitable yoga business. But it’s important to be aware of the possible pitfalls and mistakes that could hold you back.

What is passive income

Passive income is any kind of income that you generate without the need for ongoing work.  If you’re getting paid for teaching a yoga class, you’re trading your time for money, so this is active, it’s not passive.

If you get paid hourly, you’re earning money in return for your efforts, so again it’s active, not passive.

Passive income hypothetically requires no time exchange to make money.

Passive income ideas to get you started

As a yoga teacher, there are many passive income ideas that you could explore to grow and scale your business. Here are some passive income ideas to help you get started:

  1. Being an affiliate for brands and share your affiliate’s link with your community. This can work really well if you have a large community. Working with brands and products that are aligned with your brand.
  2. Creating a subscription for students to access your past recorded classes and content. They can then continue to have access on a monthly basis, such as a yoga membership.
  3. If you’re handy with the camera, you could turn your yoga photos into stock photography by submitting them to sites such as Shutterstock or Stock Photo. When people purchase your photos, you will receive either a sale or a percentage with royalties.
  4. Create an online yoga course and build an evergreen funnel.

The power of creating an online course

The last option is the most powerful passive income idea to help you generate passive income and scale your business. Creating online courses for your yoga students is the best option when it comes to actually making a substantial amount of money. An evergreen business model is what would be referred to as passive.

This is what we have here at Digital Yoga Academy. For example, our evergreen business model for the Super Yogi online course.

We offer a free lead magnet or opt-in, such as our online quiz and blueprint. Followed by an email sequence that nurtures prospective students and sells the course.

Online course creators are always talking about evergreen funnels. Evergreen sales funnels are automated systems that sell your courses 24/7. When you get your funnel dialled in and working, it does the selling for you, so you can get back to focusing on what you really love. Which is helping your students, teaching, sharing content and adding value.

Now remember. Passive income is never really passive. It takes ongoing work and commitment. That’s why it’s so important to understand the common passive income mistakes to avoid, to help you in your yoga business.

Top 3 passive income mistakes

1 Not enough research before setting the foundation

Many yoga teachers want to create a course, make it evergreen and expect to make millions of dollars. “If you build it, they will come” right?!! That is rarely a recipe for success when launching an online course.

This first mistake applies to anything you do in your business. You need to do you research and understand the problem that you are solving for your student. You must be super clear on who you are helping, what problems you are solving and whether your online course or yoga program is exactly what your prospective student needs right now.

Online courses contain your best work. They involve you bringing together all of your gifts, skills and knowledge to take your student on a deep journey of healing. In order for you to sell your course, you have to nail your messaging, understand how to speak to your ideal students, so that you course resonates with them.

It requires research and planning. It’s what our students inside of our Profitable Yoga Teacher course learn. They dive deep into insight and research, so that they can use that to make successful business decisions.

Which means avoiding the costly mistake of putting all of your heart and soul into creating an online course, that potentially no one wants or buys.

2 Avoided launching live first

Mistake number two is that you’ve created your course and dived straight into the evergreen model, without first launching and running a live version. In fact, a live version at least three times.

You need to test what works and doesn’t work first, such as your launch strategy, marketing, Facebook ads, emails and more.

When you jump straight into an evergreen version, you expect unrealistic results. Hoping for an overnight success and expecting sales to just magically roll in.

But the truth is, it takes time to develop and finesse your course. Time in testing what works and doesn’t work. The best way to test is to actually go through live launches of your program so that you can be there live with your audience live. This will help you to understand your ideal customer, how they respond to your program, offerings and marketing.

With live launches you will always get more sales in a shorter condensed period of time. Which means more buzz, students going through the course together, stories being shared and powerful testimonials.  Testimonials are an essential marketing tool for the success of your course.

Diving straight into an evergreen model, leads to dribs and drabs’ enrolments, the student experience not being as rich and it’s harder to collect testimonials.

The success of your online course weighs heavily on your continued effort to test and re-test, even when your course is evergreen.

We are constantly testing and optimising our evergreen sales funnel for our Super Yogi course. This started as a live course and turned it into an evergreen version. We continue to test our email sequences, improving where we see drop off in sales, evaluating our free lead magnets, emails, ads and marketing efforts.

There’s a lot of testing and optimising to get this right. When Super Yogi first turned into an evergreen model, it didn’t produce any sales. It has taken time and a lot of work. Which isn’t passive!! So, you have to be patient with this process and have long term goals in mind when you start down this path.

3 Not making enough effort to promote your course & stay visible

Passive income is referred to as money you make without having to trade your time for it. Yet you’ll always be spending some of your time being visible and creating content. This of course is the goal; to grow your community and nurture those relationships that feed your evergreen sales funnels.

We all like the idea of not needing to do any additional work after setting up and testing your evergreen funnel. But, in reality it’s not that simple.  Your community still expect new content. Which means passive income requires you to be actively present.

You still need to be online, visible and share content to grow your community and bring new leads into your sales funnel. The students who enrol also expect personalized support when they encounter a problem.

Reality is, the digital space is constantly changing. To remain successful, you need to stay on top of changes in your space, meet customer expectations and other responsibilities. Continually fine tuning your idea and staying relevant. Otherwise your passive income will quickly dry up.

As you can see this model isn’t entirely passive, but it’s as passive as it will get. There’s a lot of work upfront to set it up, with tweaking and testing along the way. This will not happen overnight, and it will take time, effort, and investment. You will always need to be doing the work to keep your community alive.

Summary

Even though evergreen funnels require a lot of work upfront, in the long run they are amazing. There is something so powerful about getting your first evergreen sale notification.

When you have that very first evergreen sale pop up in your notifications your yoga business changes forever.

That sales notification is your indicator that your evergreen sales funnel WORKS. All of your research, optimisation, tweaking, messaging, is worth it. It means you are building a sustainable SYSTEM – not just another promotion. You’re on your way to generating consistent, predictable income.

This doesn’t happen overnight. You have to do the upfront work, gain experience, commit to the journey and continue to make changes. It might take a year or more, but that’s ok.

Your first evergreen funnel sale is the beginning of a whole new world. Possibilities open up as you begin to realise that “I can do this!”  Which means you’re on the right track.
