How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome And Feeling Stuck In Your Biz!

Imposter Syndrome: We all feel it. It’s normal. Almost unavoidable. 

Every single person has to deal with this and it almost never goes away.

It’s that feeling of:

I’m a fraud

Who am I to be teaching this

I can’t write a blog about that

Sound familiar?

Perhaps you’re scared to put yourself out there. You’re nervous about what you’re doing and lack self-belief and confidence.

 There are all of those thoughts happening and then another thought that usually goes alongside all of this…

What will people think?

You might be worried about what your co-workers will think when you start your “side hustle” yoga blog. You might be picturing your friends and family think you’ve gone crazy!

We start to worry that we’re going to show up and look like a fraud so we lack confidence. Then we’re also worrying about what other people will think.

Feeling Unworthy

Let’s first address those feelings that we’re unworthy, that we aren’t good enough and don’t know enough. These are totally natural feelings that most people suffer from. 

But this can stop you from taking action.

Self-doubt can come and go. One day you’re on top of the world and feel like you can conquer anything and then the next day you’re thinking “What am I doing? What if this doesn’t work? What if I’m not good enough?”

These are “low-value questions” that we’re asking ourselves that make us doubt ourselves.

The thing is, we need to ask ourselves better questions.

We can greatly minimise these negative feelings of unworthiness with a few simple questions to shift your mindset.

  • Instead of asking, “What if no one watches my video?” ask “what video content can I create that will best serve my ideal students?”
  • Instead of asking, “Who am I to start a blog?” ask “How can I improve my blog reader’s quality of life by creating valuable content?”
  • Instead of asking, “How can I possibly compete with this other yoga teacher who’s been around for years?” ask “How would I behave if I had sold out offerings and a community that tuned in for my videos and read my blog posts”
  • Instead of asking, “Why am I not getting more followers?” ask “How can I make one person smile today?”

Stop Comparing Yourself To Others!

Remember that when you compare your “beginning” to someone else’s “middle” you create expectations that will hold you back. This can make imposter syndrome feel debilitating.

These expectations are not backed with goals or a system to get results because they’re based on someone else’s journey, not yours. 

You end up being very hard on yourself and losing time and energy that’s better spent on your own yoga entrepreneurial journey. We need to start to reframe the negative questions and thoughts that are holding us back.

Remember…

As a yoga teacher, you’re constantly learning, you’re constantly building, and finding better systems and ways to live a better life not only for yourself but for others. 

That takes a high level of cognitive skill, analytical prowess, and insight.

YOU help others to reach desired results.

As a teacher, you have a process or a system that others can use. You’ve achieved a result yourself that your students strive to also achieve. You’ve obtained a level of expertise and training and insight that other people are willing to pay for. 

YOU have a track record of behaviours and credentials. 

When you start to feel unworthy and like a fraud, go back to this. Go back to the results, go back to your training, your education. Go back to the messages, the emails, the social comments that you receive from your students. Go back to your testimonials.

Remind yourself of how much GRIT it has taken you to get to this point in your yoga career. There’s nothing phoney about that!

Get Out Of Your Own Way

When it comes to other people and what other people think about, this is your ego! Ego is part of imposter syndrome. We worry too much about what other people think about us. 

But people aren’t thinking about us! People don’t think or talk about you as much you think they are.

And if they are, it’s really none of our business what other people think about us. That’s their problem. Let them get on with it!

Get on with making your message much bigger than your fears.

The last question I want you to ask yourself is…

What’s the worst that can happen?

When you’re stressing out over whether you should do something or not, think about what advice you’d give to someone else in your situation.

Whenever we want to try something new but feel a twinge of fear in our hearts, we should ask ourselves “What’s the worst that can happen?”

Why Are You Experiencing Imposter Syndrome?

So where do these negative stories we tell ourselves and worry about what others think come from? How can we eliminate it so that is doesn’t continue to affect us?

It’s quite possibly because you’re not doing what you need to be doing or because a total lie has popped into your head.

Evaluate whether you are delaying something or not putting in the required effort. Because if that is the case you are not doing what you know you should be doing.

So Take Action!

Taking action is one of the fastest ways to dissolve insecurities and imposter syndrome. When you take action, it pushes past that feeling and allows you to accomplish what you set out to do.

This will then make you feel accomplished.

If you are taking action but you’re still feeling unworthy, the more time you spend feeding that lie in your head telling you you’re not good enough, that you’re fake and that you don’t deserve what you’re working for – the more the lie will grow and the more you’ll believe it.

If that is the case that you are taking action but you’re still feeling unworthy.  

The world needs yoga teachers to make a big impact!

You can’t make an impact if you’re feeling uninspired, unmotivated or stuck. Many yoga teachers feel this way. Feeling stuck can happen at any point in your yoga entrepreneurial journey.

You need to do the inner work to address what is going on in your head to reframe and shift your mindset and start taking action.

Start A System To Overcome Imposter Syndrome

The best way to take action is to have systems and structure in our business. It doesn’t matter what your goals are, you won’t move forward if you don’t have a system to get the results you want.

A system will help you to show up every day and work towards your goals. These things don’t just happen magically! You have to put the work in and get clear on your system to succeed.
